Did you catch the premiere of Secret Millionaire featuring millionaire, Dani Johnson on ABC on Sunday? It was the most watched show on television that night, but forthose who missed it, I thought I'd give you a rundown of what happened.
So, who is Dani Johnson? Well, she had troubled childhood, having suffered violence and sexual abuse as well as being brought up in a home well below the poverty line that was infested with drugs. By age 17, she was pregnant and her troubles were compounded four years later when, at the tender age of 21, she was homeless. Having reached rock-bottom, she made the positive decision to make something of her life so that she could help herself and others that had suffered similar attrocities, and so from the trunk of her car, she began what is now her multi-million dollar business.
In Secret Millionaire, Johnson is whisked away to the run-down district of Western Heights in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is rife with drugs, prostitution and crime and must be reminscent to her of her childhood. The one-bedroomed apartment she must stay in for the week is disgusting and she is given just $40 for sustenance.
After cleaning up and settling in, the first place Johnson visits is The love Kitchen, which was created by two ladies to feed the elderly and homeless. It is supported entirely by volunteer staff and private donations.
Next on the list is The Joy of Music, a non-profit organisation that provides free instruments and music lessons to under-privileged children. Johnson gets to meet some of the talented kids that they have helped to develop and learns about some of those that have attained music scholarships thanks to the organisation.
Johnson then gets to meet a lady that runs an organisation that specialises in giving bedroom makeovers to kids with life-threatening illnesses. It is called Special Spaces and Johnson discovers that the owner is struggling to keep the organisation running because she doesn’t have the time to do the volunteer work, while at the sames time providing for her own family.
On her final day in the district, Johnson goes back to the places she visited previously to wish them farewell, reveal her true identity and make donations of either $80,000 (I won’t go into the details here so I don’t ruin it for those that haven’t seen it it).
Seeing the compassion, love and selflessness of the people in the show was quite overwhelming to me and by the end, my face was soaked in tears. The dedication and hard work that they gave to others – people that they’d never even met – was inspirational and showed that the true heroes of Secret Millionaire is not the millionaires but the volunteers that give their time, sweat, hugs and smiles to those that need them.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the premiere of Secret Millionaire and am very much looking forward to the next couple of episodes featuring real estate investor Marc Paskin, and Secret Millionaire James Malinchak.
